Braces Too Early? Why Timing Can Make or Break Orthodontic Treatment

By Jacy Papasikos, DDS, MS – Orthodontist at Papasikos Orthodontics January 2, 2026

In orthodontics, one of the clearest signs of experience is knowing when to start treatment, and when to wait. While early evaluations are important, the timing of comprehensive orthodontic treatment requires careful judgment.

To be clear, this discussion refers to full orthodontic treatment - comprehensive braces or aligner therapy intended to completely straighten teeth and correct the bite. This is different from Phase I or interceptive treatment, which may be appropriate earlier to guide growth or prevent future problems.

Why Comprehensive Braces Started Too Early Can Create Problems

Baby teeth are still present
When full braces are placed before the permanent teeth have erupted, treatment often stalls while waiting for development to catch up.

The 12-year molars aren’t in yet
These teeth are essential for efficient bite correction. Starting full treatment before they erupt limits precision and predictability.

Treatment becomes unnecessarily long
What should be a focused, efficient course can stretch into years of extended care.

The Real Costs of Prolonged Treatment

Patient burnout
Children and parents lose momentum during long treatment timelines.

Increased cavity risk
Braces make hygiene more challenging and the longer they’re on, the higher the risk for decalcification and cavities.

Compromised efficiency
Orthodontic mechanics work best when the full adult dentition is present.

Early Evaluation Is Essential; Early Full Treatment Is Not Always

At our practice, we believe in early, thoughtful evaluation and strategic timing. Sometimes the most effective decision is to monitor growth and begin comprehensive treatment when it will be shortest, safest, and most predictable.

The Takeaway for Parents

High-quality orthodontic care isn’t about doing more; it’s about doing things at the right time. Experience, planning, and restraint matter.

A consultation is not a commitment to braces. It’s an opportunity for expert guidance, long-term planning, and a treatment timeline designed for the best possible outcome.
